The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM)
ASAM (founded in 1954) is a professional society representing over 3,600 physicians, clinicians and associated professionals in the field of addiction medicine. ASAM is dedicated to increasing access and improving the quality of addiction treatment, educating physicians and the public, supporting research and prevention, and promoting the appropriate role of physicians in the care of patients with addiction.
ASAM's criteria, formerly known as the ASAM patient placement criteria, is the result of a collaboration that began in the 1980s to define one national set of criteria for providing outcome-orientated and results-based care in the treatment of addiction. The ASAM criteria is the most widely used and comprehensive set of guidelines for placement, continued stay and transfer/discharge of patients with addiction and co-occurring conditions.
UCLA ISAP is planning to conduct a series of introductory ASAM Criteria webinars in the spring of 2020. Registration information will be posted on this website when it becomes available.
Full Day ASAM Trainings Available: The full day ASAM training provides a general overview of ASAM as well as instruction related to the proper utilization of the ASAM criteria for appropriate patient placement. It will also discuss utilizing ASAM criteria to determine the appropriate treatment of patients based upon their level of care. The emphasis throughout the ASAM training series will be the use of the ASAM Criteria as a tool for initial client placement and ongoing services at a given level of care. This training will also address the role of ASAM in medical necessity and treatment planning.
