ISAP Research Projects
Name of Project: An Outpatient, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial of Baclofen for Cocaine Dependence
Principal Investigator: Steven Shoptaw, Ph.D.
Project Director: James Peck, Psy.D.
Funding agency: NIDA
Funding period: Feb 2003-August 2004
Scope of project: This project seeks to evaluate the efficacy of the GABAß agonist baclofen compared to placebo in treating cocaine dependence. The medication/placebo is delivered on a platform of weekly individual cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) (Carroll et al., 2000) focused on relapse prevention, to 150 cocaine-dependent individuals. Participants are randomly assigned to baclofen or placebo using an urn randomization procedure. The main question of interest in this clinical trial is whether participants who are randomly assigned to active medication have better outcomes in terms of reduced cocaine use than participants assigned to receive placebo.
