ISAP Research Projects

Name of Project: Contingency Management for Addictions Treatment: A Meta-Analysis

Principal Investigator: Michael Prendergast

Co-Principal Investigator: Deborah Podus

Project Director: Deborah Podus

Funding Agency: Center for Health Care Evaluation, VA Palo Alto Health Care System

Funding Period: October 2002 – March 2004

Scope of Project: (i.e., abstract): The purpose of this study is to conduct a quantitative synthesis of controlled studies of the use of contingency management techniques in the treatment of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drug dependence. The specific objectives of the meta-analysis are to: (1) Determine the overall average effect size of contingency management interventions on drug use outcomes for clients participating in treatment programs, measured at the end of treatment and at specified follow-up points; (2) Assess the degree to which methodological characteristics (e.g., study design, sample size) account for variability in effect sizes among contingency management studies; (3) Assess the degree to which client (e.g., gender, primary drug) and treatment characteristics (e.g., treatment setting, duration of treatment) account for variability in effect sizes among contingency management studies; (4) Determine the relative effectiveness of different schedules and types of contingent reinforcement on treatment outcomes.
