Name of Project: GHB: Effects, Withdrawal, and Treatment

Funding Period: December 2002-November 2007

Scope of Project: This series of research studies are designed to 1) identify and quantify the signs and symptoms of GHB withdrawal by medical monitoring, withdrawal rating scales and EEG studies 2) to determine predictors of withdrawal severity and good treatment response 3) to determine the safety and feasibility of using open-label low dose lorazepam for the treatment of mild GHB withdrawal and 4) to determine in a randomized control trial if high dose pentobarbital compared to lorazepam is more effective for treating moderate to severe withdrawal The long-term goals of these projects are to identify predictors of withdrawal severity and develop and validate treatment guidelines for GHB withdrawal.
