Name of Project: Medication Development for Stimulant Dependence (MDS): Phase II-Double Blind, Placebo-Controlled Dose Response Trial of Ondansetron for the Treatment of Methamphetamine Dependence in Thailand

Principal Investigator: Walter Ling, M.D.

Project Director: Jerry Cunningham-Rathner

Funding Agency: National Institute on Drug Addiction (NIDA)

Funding Period: March 2003-February 2006

Scope of Project: This study is a randomized double blind clinical trial of the efficacy and safety of three wide range doses of ondansetron (0.25, 1.0 and 4.0 mg taken orally twice per day) to reduce methamphetamine use in subjects with methamphetamine dependence and to determine the optimal dose of ondansetron. It’s being conducted at two sites in Thailand (Chiang Mai and Bangkok). It is hypothesized that ondansetron treatment, compared to placebo, will be associated with a decrease in methamphetamine use as measured by proportion of methamphetamine free urines and self reported non use days.
